When you hear the word porridge, you may immediately think of baby food, but the truth is that porridge isn’t just for children.
Porridge is an international dish and is served as a dessert all over the world. In Iran, a similar milky dessert made with rice flour is called fereni.
Besides its great taste and the many ways you can vary its flavor, this dessert also has numerous health benefits.
If you use soy milk instead of dairy milk, its benefits will multiply.
In this article, we’ll show you how to make porridge with soy milk.
Benefits of Porridge:
Oat porridge is rich in fiber, and diets high in fiber are linked to a lower risk of digestive problems and type 2 diabetes.
Whole-grain oats can also support heart health as part of a balanced diet.
Because it is filling, porridge can also help with weight management.
If you are watching your weight, sweeten it lightly.
Soy Milk for Children:
You may be wondering whether soy milk is suitable for children and infants.
The properties of soy milk are completely different from those of cow’s milk, so the way it is consumed is different as well.
Soy milk is not a replacement for breast milk or infant formula. From the age of one, fortified soy milk can be part of a child’s diet if your pediatrician agrees.
Some children who are allergic to cow’s milk are also allergic to soy protein.
Soy is one of the major food allergens. If you think your baby may be sensitive to soy, don’t test it yourself — ask your pediatrician.
Seek medical help if your child has symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, a rash or difficulty breathing after eating soy.
Another substance found in abundance in soy and its derivatives is isoflavones.
Isoflavones are also found in soy-based infant formula, and studies have not shown clear harm to children from normal amounts of soy foods.
No Sugar:
When sweetening porridge, don’t reach for sugar right away.
By using natural sweeteners, you can both add more nutritional value to your porridge and give it different flavors.
We recommend honey as a natural and nutritious sweetener.
Ingredients:
1 cup rolled oats
2 cups warm water
2 cups soy milk
1 teaspoon salt
Some honey
1 ripe banana
How to Make the Porridge:
Put the oats, hot water, soy milk, and salt in a pot and place it over medium heat.
Stir until the mixture comes to a boil and thickens, or microwave it on high for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add the honey and mashed banana and stir.
Finally, serve it with extra banana and soy milk.
Your plant-based porridge with soy milk is ready.
Enjoy!
